Dont hear too many bad things about them. Starting in 1995 (maybe 94), the northstar was optional in the DeVille, standard in 1996.Yes & no. The problem is that the head bolt threads pull. Coolant gets into the cylnder and the rest is history. The question is, which came first, head bolt failure, allowing coolant into the bolt holes, acting as a catalyst and corroding the threads, or the threads failing first, allowing coolant into the cylinders. 2.The Northstar gets a bad rap from mostly owners who neglect maintenance. Head gasket issues yes, but that was resolved for the 2003 model years and above. Don't let that discourage you from buying an older one though, they're still relatively bulletproof motors that love WOT runs. Just do your homework and check maintenance records..
