I am a stickler for comparison shopping and have a xml spreadsheet of prices at Aldi, Walmart, and Publix--overall, Aldi is, hands down, the cheapest, Walmart comes in second, with Publix third. Some of the same people will shop at Target, Publix, and Walmart (me for example) but I do know people who wouldn't be caught dead in a Walmart and yes, they are stuck up bitches. I think though that since Walmart is cheaper than the other big stores it draws in the specific crowd of low to medium classes.
